This guide covers the six main categories of steel doors used in Egyptian commercial and industrial buildings — what each type does, how it is rated, and where it is required.
1. Fire Rated Steel Doors (30 / 60 / 120 min)
The most technically demanding category. A fire rated steel door is a tested assembly — leaf, frame, seals, and hardware — certified to contain flames, heat, and smoke for a defined period. Required by Egyptian Civil Defense regulations in stairwells, plant rooms, electrical rooms, and any opening in a fire-rated wall. Available in single and double leaf, with ratings from 30 minutes (low-risk compartmentation) to 120 minutes (high-risk areas such as generator rooms and fuel stores).
Typical applications: Stairwells, plant rooms, electrical rooms, generator rooms, fire compartment walls in commercial and industrial buildings.
2. Emergency Exit Doors (Panic Doors)
Emergency exit doors combine a fire rating with certified panic hardware — a push bar or touch pad that releases the door with a single motion, no key or handle required. Designed for high-occupancy spaces where rapid evacuation is critical. Must meet both fire resistance standards and EN 1125 (panic exit devices) or EN 179 (emergency exit devices) depending on occupancy type.
Typical applications: Assembly halls, cinemas, shopping centres, factories, warehouses, schools, hospitals — any space with more than a defined occupancy threshold.
3. Escape Doors
Escape doors are the final link in an evacuation route — the door that leads from the building to a place of safety. They must open outward in the direction of travel, be unobstructed at all times, and be operable without a key from the inside. Where the escape route also passes through a fire-rated compartment boundary, the escape door must carry a fire rating as well as panic hardware.
Typical applications: Final exit points from buildings, stairwell discharge doors, car park exits, basement escape routes.
4. Security Steel Doors
Non-fire-rated steel doors engineered for physical security — resistance to forced entry, impact, and tool attack. Specified by resistance class (RC1–RC6 under EN 1627) rather than fire rating. Used where the primary threat is intrusion rather than fire. Can be combined with a fire rating where both threats must be addressed.
Typical applications: Server rooms, cash handling areas, perimeter access points, high-value storage, secure offices.
5. Acoustic Steel Doors
Steel doors with enhanced sound attenuation cores and perimeter acoustic seals. Rated in decibels of sound reduction (Rw). Used where noise transmission between spaces must be controlled — mechanical plant rooms, recording studios, conference rooms adjacent to noisy areas. Can be combined with a fire rating.
Typical applications: Plant rooms, generator enclosures, recording studios, conference facilities, hotel corridors.
6. Stainless Steel Doors
Manufactured from Grade 304 or 316 stainless steel for environments where corrosion resistance is essential. Maintains appearance and structural integrity in high-humidity, chemical-exposure, and coastal environments where galvanised steel degrades rapidly. Available with fire ratings. Higher upfront cost offset by significantly longer service life.
Typical applications: Hospitals, pharmaceutical plants, food processing facilities, coastal buildings, swimming pool enclosures, clean rooms.
How to Choose the Right Steel Door
The correct starting point is the building's fire strategy and Civil Defense submission — not the door catalogue. The fire strategy defines which openings require fire ratings, what rating duration is needed, and where emergency exit or escape door requirements apply. Once those parameters are established, the door specification follows logically.
Key questions to answer before specifying:
- Is the opening in a fire-rated wall? If yes, the door must carry a fire rating equal to the wall rating.
- Is the opening on an evacuation route? If yes, panic hardware and outward-opening direction are likely required.
- What is the environment? Coastal, chemical, or high-humidity environments require stainless steel or specialist coatings.
- What is the security requirement? If forced-entry resistance is needed alongside fire rating, a combined fire/security door must be specified.
- What is the acoustic requirement? Plant rooms and generator enclosures typically need both fire rating and acoustic performance.
